About SEIJIN-shiki USA

SEIJIN-shiki (成人式) is a cherished tradition in Japan that brings communities together to recognize and celebrate young people entering adulthood. These young adults are known as “new SEIJIN (新成人).”

Launched in 2020 by JIA Foundation, SEIJIN-shiki USA draws on this tradition while embracing the diverse cultural backgrounds and values of young people growing up in the United States. The celebration fosters cultural exchange and Japan–U.S. friendship while offering encouragement as they begin a new chapter in their lives.

Previous participants have valued the opportunity to experience Japanese traditions, explore their cultural identities, and form lasting friendships. Through this shared milestone, JIA Foundation hopes to establish a new American tradition of bringing communities together to celebrate their journey into adulthood.

As SEIJIN-shiki USA transitions to an every-other-year schedule, eligibility has been expanded to ages 18–21, reflecting coming-of-age milestones in Japan and the United States. Participants can choose the age that feels right for their celebration.
