Science
Hear from UW students about their research on how microorganisms can turn CO2 into valuable products, the small-scale electronic backpacks that can monitor and track the movement of small insects, and how algorithms can solve problems in medical imaging of the brain.

Chemical production harms the planet, but nature offers solutions. Microorganisms can turn CO2 into valuable products. Jackson Comes’ research in synthetic biology uses DNA to create greener, safer biochemicals, contributing to a sustainable future.

Alyssa Giedd studies biology to draw inspiration for robotic design and control. Using small-scale electronic backpacks, she’s able to monitor and track the movement of small insects like dragonflies to learn more about how they adapt and recover from damage.

Juampablo Heras Rivera is a PhD student in KurtLab at UW, where he applies deep learning. He is interested in developing text-guided systems that interact with clinicians to help them analyze images faster and develop more effective treatment plans.
