Town Hall Presents

Join co-authors Dr. Caprice D. Hollins and Ilsa Govan in conversation with Ruchika T. Malhotra, author of Uncompete: Rejecting Competition to Unlock Success.

For over two decades, Hollins and Govan, Co-Founders of Cultures Connecting, have been bringing people together to talk about race, racism, power, and privilege. They have learned that these conversations rarely go as planned. People get uncomfortable. Emotions surface. Resistance shows up. People say things that cause harm, others go silent, and we can find ourselves unsure of what to say or do next.

At a time when conversations about race and racial justice are increasingly difficult to navigate, knowing how to stay engaged matters.

Drawing from the latest edition of Facilitating Conversations on Race: Strategies for Leading Group Discourse, Hollins and Govan will share stories from their experiences facilitating conversations on race, lessons they have learned from the moments that did not go as planned, and practical strategies for navigating difficult conversations without avoiding the hard stuff.

Caprice D. Hollins has over 25 years of experience working with ethnically diverse populations, facilitating workshops on racism, and teaching graduate courses, including 20 years as an Associate Professor of Counseling at The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. After serving as the first Director of Equity and Race Relations for Seattle Public Schools, she co-founded Cultures Connecting, LLC in 2008. Her organization provides workshops, keynotes, leadership coaching, and consulting services to organizations seeking to strengthen their ability to engage in race conversations and dismantle institutional racism. She is the author of Inside Out: The Equity Leader’s Guide to Undoing Institutional Racism and co-author of Facilitating Conversations on Race: Strategies for Leading Group Discourse. Dr. Hollins was also a Seattle 2020 TEDx Speaker, presenting “What White People Can Do to Move Race Conversations Forward”.

Ilsa Govan believes we stifle children’s innate sense of justice when we tell them, “Life’s not fair.” As a child, she questioned why girls were supposed to like pink and boys like blue, why her parent’s LGBTQIA+ friends were targets of hate crimes, and why her Black neighbors were evicted from the apartment next door. Later in life, this led to a deep examination of her own identity as queer, White cis-gender woman. Ilsa has been lucky enough to find others with a shared passion for social justice and partner in writing two books. Her most recent, co-authored with Dr. Caprice D. Hollins, is a guide for leading the necessary and difficult conversations they have been practicing as Co-Founders of Cultures Connecting since 2008: Facilitating Conversations on Race: Strategies for Group Discourse (Bloomsbury, 2026). What’s Up with White Women? Unpacking Sexism and White Privilege in Pursuit of Racial Justice, co-authored with Tilman Smith, invites other White women to join them in looking at their stories of assimilation, resistance, and justice-centered leadership.

Ruchika T. Malhotra is the author of three books, including the national bestseller, Uncompete: Rejecting Competition to Unlock Success. She is also the founder of Candour, a global inclusion strategy firm. Her writing appears regularly in publications such as Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, and more. Ruchika has previously held adjunct faculty positions at Seattle University and the University of Washington, where she now advises the Communication Leadership graduate program.
