Exploring Both Old and New Compositions
Presented by Thalia Symphony Orchestra. For questions about this event, please contact Thalia Symphony Orchestra at info@thaliasymphony.org.
Join Thalia Symphony for their 2024-2025 season opener Sunday afternoon, October 20th, 2024. The concert will feature the music of Ottorino Respighi, Mel Bonis, W.A. Mozart and William Grant Still. This season Thalia Symphony will be exploring both old and new: especially new pieces that take older pieces for inspiration and old pieces that they hope to approach with fresh ear. Respighi’s The Birds re-works music from the 17th and 18th centuries. French composer Melanie Bonis’ 1909 composition Three Legendary Women is a modern take on Cleopatra, Salome and Ophelia. Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute is among opera’s most imaginative. Thalia Symphony is especially excited to perform Still’s brilliant and ground-breaking Afro American Symphony which premiered in the 1930s and has been revived in recent years.
