Los Vega Son Jarocho is a group of traditional musicians dedicated for almost 25 years to the performance and promotion of traditional son jarocho. Their music offers an accomplished balance combining cultural roots, family heritage, performance quality, and stage experience.
In collaboration with Tom Landa and featuring members of Locarno, Los Vega Son Jarocho will perform songs from their new album and old favorites, celebrating the transnational dialogue between Latinx communities across North America.
Son jarocho melds Mexican folk music with Cuban son and other influences in a dynamic and lyrical music special to the Veracruz region. It is music traditionally played on stringed instruments like the jarana, the requinto, and the vazarrona guitar, often accompanied by foot-stomping dance (zapateado) – and it is simply glorious! The Vegas represent one of the long-standing clans who have taken on the responsibility of keeping this rich musical expression alive. They perform the traditional sones from the broad repertoire of jarocho music, sometimes adding their own contemporary twist.

Over the past 20 years, Los Vega Son Jarocho has appeared at major cultural and artistic festivals across Mexico and internationally, including tours in China, the United States, Canada, and Colombia. Their music has also reached global audiences through film, notably with their rendition of “La Bruja” featured in the soundtrack of Frida, which received an Academy Award nomination.
In 2018, the group celebrated its 20th anniversary with a large-scale collaborative performance featuring more than 20 distinguished son jarocho artists. They have also been recognized with a nomination for the prestigious Lunas del Auditorio and were invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York as part of a concert conducted by composer Philip Glass.
Los Vega Son Jarocho has released five albums and continues to share the living tradition of son jarocho with audiences worldwide.
Locarno is the Latin project of JUNO Award winning musician, Tom Landa. Like him, the music is equal parts Mexican and Canadian. Tom was born and raised in Mexico City, and moved to Canada in his teens. In the mid-nineties, he formed the Folk Roots band, The Paperboys, who have been touring world-wide for over 20 years. Tom has always dabbled in Latin music, and in 2005 decided to immerse himself more into genre, and started working on material for an album. In 2006 he was awarded a Canada Council Grant to study traditional Mexican Music in Veracruz, Mexico. Tom spent his days learning the jarana (an 8 string guitar), and learning songs from the Son Jarocho repertoire.
