This Engrained is Our Story debut celebrates the voices of our state’s indigenous seed keepers and heritage grain producers. The food justice non-profit Revolutionary Grains spent the past two years weaving a collective story of how resilient our food system is, if we look beyond the industrial grain complex. Revolutionary Grains archives this resilience in a quilted seed bank: Engrained is Our Story. Now, they share this story with you.
Join Town Hall and Revolutionary Grains for an evening of agricultural dances, song, and oral storytelling. Witness for the first time the completed seed bank squares. Taste catered bites that use the ingredients preserved in Engrained is Our Story. Make art that will be woven into the borders of the quilted seed bank. Walk away with community and actionable hope.

Simren Kaur Rai is a storyteller, multimedia artist, and environmental justice activist. As the founder of Revolutionary Grains, she challenges colonial food systems to help build a more equitable, resilient future. Rooted in her Punjabi heritage and the philosophy of Chardi Kala (everlasting optimism), Simren draws on ancestral knowledge and personal resilience to demonstrate our collective capacity for adaptation and systemic change. She holds an MFA in Arts Leadership from Seattle University and weaves together her background in environmental conservation, art, and community building as a co-lead of “Engrained is Our Story.”
Fatema Boxwala is a visual artist, environmental and economic justice activist, and computer scientist based in Seattle. She is passionate about creating a world—and a state—where everyone can live with dignity and joy. As the Director of Operations for Revolutionary Grains, Fatema blends her artistic vision with operational expertise to build more equitable and culturally grounded foodways. Beyond her organizational leadership, she is a dedicated progressive advocate working to advance economic equity across Washington State. Fatema draws on her experience in fiber art and policy research as a co-lead of “Engrained is Our Story.”
