Bob Bauer, a leading legal adviser to the National Democratic Party offers reflections on American politics, drawing from his 46-year career in his new book, The Unraveling. Exploring the erosion of political ethics, he highlights the urgent need for their restoration to renew American democracy.

Bob Bauer has been involved in many of the biggest political struggles in the five decades since the post-Watergate 1970s. He has been a leading legal adviser to the National Democratic Party and to its candidates on strategies for winning elections and protecting voting rights. He has represented the party in national political conflicts and controversies. He was the chief counsel to both of President Obama’s presidential campaigns and served as President Obama’s White House counsel. He was counsel to the Democratic Senate leader during President Clinton’s impeachment trial. He was a senior adviser to the Biden presidential campaign on voting rights, election protection, and vice presidential selection. His responsibilities included playing the role of Donald Trump in preparation for the general election debates. Bauer is also now on the faculty of the New York University School of Law, teaching political reform and the ethical challenges facing lawyers in public life. He co-authored the book After Trump: Reconstructing the Presidency with Jack Goldsmith.
David Burman, a partner in Perkins Coie’s Business Litigation practice, has more than 30 years of experience in litigation, including antitrust, appellate, class action, consumer protection, constitutional, media, patent and intellectual property, privacy, and other cases. He also counsels clients in these and other areas. He has worked on many high-profile cases, including two U.S. Supreme Court arguments, the trial contesting the 2004 Washington State Governor’s election, Costco Wholesale Corporation’s precedent-setting antitrust and constitutional challenges to state wine and liquor laws, and the Yellow Pages publishers’ successful constitutional challenge to municipal restrictions on distribution. He was national counsel in the Pharmaceutical AWP class actions in a federal MDL and more than a dozen state courts. He served as an attorney representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference in 2003 – 2006 and 2009, was a speaker at the 2010 Conference and served on the Ninth Circuit Rules Advisory Committee. He was selected as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and as a member of the American Law Institute, where he was an advisor in drafting the “Principles of Aggregate Litigation.”
