How many colors could there really be? Turns out, truly so many – and they serve far more functions than just splashing on an accent wall to give the room a fun little pop. In fact, color plays an incredibly important and fascinating role everywhere from the natural world to the science lab to the far reaches of space.

In their new coffee table art book The Universe in 100 Colors: Weird and Wondrous Colors from Science and Nature, science enthusiasts and advocates Tyler Thrasher and Terry Mudge dip into this vast variety of colors and the niche roles they fill. From brilliantly adapted pigments in nature to human-made hues with specific functions in mind, The Universe in 100 Colors takes readers on a technicolor tour well beyond the rainbow. Through vibrant full-page visuals and corresponding snappy color commentary, expect to learn about colors created by tropical trees and deep sea creatures, by aerospace engineers and radioactive chemicals, by sound waves and by the absence of light entirely.

Driven by a mutual urge to experiment, educate, and entertain, Thrasher and Mudge have collaborated to blend the worlds of science and art without skimping on flash or function. Complete with an introduction to color theory, comprehensively layered research, myth-busting trivia, vivid photography, and a forward by Hank Green, The Universe in 100 Colors is a celebration of curiosity and a wonder for the senses.

Tyler Thrasher is an illustrator, self-taught chemist and botanist, and a self-described “mad scientist artist.” His experimental endeavors utilize a blend of chemistry and organic materials ranging from crystallized skulls and insects to hybrid plants and preserved botanicals that glow in the dark. His prominent online platform combines his work with activism, humor, and advocating for mental health and accessibility.

Terry Mudge is the founder and scientific director of Stemcell, a shop focused on providing approachable learning tools and collectible specimens in STEM fields. He is also the creator of Matter, the “science museum in a box” subscription service that encourages inquisitive engagement with a variety of science fields for all ages.
