SUMMARY:Dynasty Handbag
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE 5/11/26: This event is canceled for 5/13\, and we are working to identify new dates for a future presentation. If you have any questions\, contact patronservices@townhallseattle.org. \n\nQueer performance artist Jibz Cameron\, best known for her multimedia alter ego Dynasty Handbag\, will present an evening of performance\, film\, and readings celebrating the debut of her memoir. \nHell in a Handbag traces Cameron’s unique perspective\, shaped by a childhood spent with hippie clowns in Northern California\, through making morbid zines as a teen in the East Bay punk scene\, to in-your-face encounters with misogyny in New York City’s avant-garde theater scene. By turns both frank and funny\, Cameron addresses the impact of addiction and mental illness in her life\, as well as her mother’s suicide\, in a candid account of her journey. \nThis personal narrative culminates in the birth of Dynasty Handbag and her gutting commentary on contemporary life. In a first\, both Jibz Cameron and Dynasty Handbag tell the story of these intimately intertwined halves of one iconic individual.

SUMMARY:Kimberlé Crenshaw with Angela Rye
DESCRIPTION:By way of structured academia or outspoken social commentary\, the work of Kimberlé Crenshaw can be found woven throughout the fabric of modern American sociopolitical discourse. Through establishing the concepts of intersectionality and critical race theory\, Crenshaw helped lay a foundation for decades of discussion and activism around race and gender across the world. In her upcoming memoir Backtalker\, Crenshaw recounts the personal journeys that shaped her as someone who champions taking notice and speaking up. \nWith intimate and compelling storytelling\, Crenshaw takes readers back to her roots as a little girl in Canton\, Ohio\, who saw and said things that others didn’t. As the daughter of a strong-minded teacher and pathbreaking public servant and the sister of a protective\, yet bullying older brother\, she starts to talk back. When she is denied a role in the kindergarten school play. When she is escorted to the back door of a private club. When Anita Hill is exiled for testifying against Clarence Thomas. When OJ Simpson goes on trial. When Obama launched My Brother’s Keeper\, a movement focused on boys of color only. When the movement against police violence overlooks Black women. Crenshaw keeps talking back. From classroom to courtroom\, as the years go by – with new context and critique\, but always the same fervor for challenging the structures that were never built for her. \nBacktalker presents an immersive\, defiant\, and deeply personal portrayal of a life spent fighting to be heard. Evoking emotions and revelations with each instance\, Crenshaw transports readers to the moments that not only shaped her\, but motivated her to work towards reshaping the world. Combining insight\, intention\, and impact\, Backtalker details the path Crenshaw carved to establish herself as a pioneering voice in American civil rights– and a force to be reckoned with.

SUMMARY:How to be a Strategic Political Donor
DESCRIPTION:Are you ever overwhelmed with politics and trying to figure out how and where to channel your resources to make a difference? Or\, worse\, have you thrown up your hands in disgust and opted for the couch? \nJoin an empowering conversation on “How to be a strategic political donor\,” where you will learn that you have agency and can make a difference in determining the future of our Democracy. \nBased on her decades-long journey in this arena\, U.S. Ambassador (ret) Suzi LeVine will paint the landscape of the political ecosystem and decode their acronyms; provide a roadmap with key elections and milestones between now and 2032; and share specific ideas on how to build your political investment portfolio so you can maximize your precious 4Ts – your Treasure\, Time\, Talent\, and Team. \nShe wants participants to go from being tactical\, opportunistic\, and worried to being strategic\, effective\, and determined (from worried to warrior). For example\, you will learn how to process the flood of texts and emails coming from well-meaning politicians and organizations asking for your support and sharing how they’re the most important entity in which to invest. \nHer goal is for you to leave feeling empowered\, engaged\, and equipped to jump in and to get others you know off the couch and onto the field. \nWith a Q&A with former State Senator and community leader Joe Nguyen.

SUMMARY:Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen with Jon Mooallem
DESCRIPTION:Renowned picture book creators\, Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen\, want people of all ages to understand and appreciate children’s stories and how this art form enriches our individual lives and our culture. Speaking on the process of creating their latest collaboration\, a board book series called Now I See\, Barnett and Klassen have insights into what makes a great children’s book using elements you can find both on and off the page. \nThis multi-award winning\, New York Times bestselling duo operates differently than a lot of children’s book creators. Typically\, an author and illustrator don’t directly collaborate\, and yet these two find success in close conversations with each other. Using their unique perspectives\, Barnett and Klassen also write a newsletter for adults\, Looking at Picture Books\, which examines the picture book as a respected art form. \nTheir Now I See board book collection applies that lens by celebrating the spare beauty and wonder of the changing seasons from the point of view of a child. A tree that has full green leaves in Now I See Summer sheds them in Now I See Fall. The snowy sky of Now I See Winter gives way to the rainy sky in Now I See Spring. And of course\, the perfect hat changes with each season\, too. Barnett and Klassen want to uplift the picture book as an art form\, showing everyone of every age what goes into the making of great children’s literature. They’ll discuss the importance and value of picture books — and how they work. Kids are\, of course\, welcome\, but the primary audience for these events is adults keen to learn more about picture books.

SUMMARY:Peter Beinart with Smadar Ben-Natan
DESCRIPTION:As the Gaza war stretches into its third year\, journalism professor and MSNBC analyst Peter Beinart claims that\, as a Jew\, he must reckon with the intense moral and theological tensions that not only he holds\, but what he sees as challenges for Judaism as a whole. Because of these tensions\, Beinart believes the Jewish community must build a new answer to the question: What does it mean to be a Jew? From his book\, Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning\, MSNBC analyst Peter Beinart imagines a world where Israeli Jews have the right to equality\, not supremacy\, and in which Jewish and Palestinian safety are not mutually exclusive but intertwined. In Beinart’s view\, one story dominates Jewish communal life: that of persecution and victimhood. It is a story that erases much of the nuance of Jewish religious tradition and warps our understanding of Israel and Palestine. Beinart claims that\, as a Jew\, he must reckon with the intense moral and theological tensions that not only he holds\, but what he sees as challenges for Judaism as a whole. Because of these tensions\, Beinart believes the Jewish community must tell a new story and build a new answer to the question: What does it mean to be a Jew? From his book\, Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza\, Beinart offers a path toward resolution.

SUMMARY:Ron Krabill
DESCRIPTION:As Seattle gears up to host the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup\, the city finds itself at the center of a heated debate: Is the tournament an economic catalyst or a misuse of public funds? A celebration of Seattle’s cultural vibrancy or a distraction from pressing regional challenges? A thrilling chance to witness the world’s greatest athletes—or a calculated profit grab by global elites? \nThis talk invites audiences to explore five distinct perspectives on the political and cultural impact of the tournament—offering a more nuanced\, thought-provoking look at what the World Cup means for Seattle and the world.

SUMMARY:Global Rhythms: Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino
DESCRIPTION:Cure whatever may ail you\, whether it be a bite from the tarantula or just a general malaise at the state of the world with Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino (CGS)\, a seven-member ensemble from the Salento peninsula of Apulia “the heel of the boot” of Italy. \nLed by tambourine player and violinist\, Mauro Duarante\, who inherited leadership from his father in 2007\, CGS combines music and dance that engage centuries of history with lyrics that often address modern challenges. By reinterpreting musical traditions\, including the famous ritual\, pizzica tarantata (believed to have the power to cure the bite of a tarantula through music\, trance\, and dance)\, CGS bring historic sounds into the present with respect paid to the past. \nCanzoniere Grecanico Salentino is anchored by the singing of a trio of outstanding vocalists: the mesmerizing Alessia Tondo\, Giancarlo Paglialunga (a masterful player of the tamburrieddhu)\, and Emanuele Licci\, a guitar and bouzouki player who\, like Durante\, is the son of an original CGS member\, reminding us of the importance of tradition passed down through a familial line. Powering the band’s sound are Giulio Bianco on a brace of instruments including the Italian bagpipes\, and pizzica scholar Massimiliano Morabito\, hailed as “the best traditional diatonic accordionist in Puglia.” In keeping with the tradition of tarantism\, the seventh member of the band is not a musician at all\, but the incomparable dancer Silvia Perrone. \nWhen listening\, it becomes apparent that the energy of the music reflects the peninsula of Apulia from which the band hails\, soaring across cliffs of emotion as waves of passion crash into a rocky sea before nestling to rest in a quaint stucco abode. CGS continues the Salentine tradition of using pizzica tarantata to draw the community together in order to process life’s struggles and to expel the poisons of the contemporary world. \nWatch: “Taranta” – Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino live a Propaganda Live (La7)

DESCRIPTION:In the shadow of an empire\, in a world on fire\, what if we could imagine — and build — otherwise? Crip feminist technoscience teaches us how to wield disabled\, mad\, neuroexpansive\, crip\, sick people’s wisdom as a vital tool for surviving now and thriving then. Disabled people know intimately how to strategically leverage legal and policy tools and know precisely the limitations of these tools and frameworks. \nIn a polycrisis of pandemic\, late-stage capitalism\, genocide\, climate catastrophe\, human rights atrocity\, and failure of democratic institutions\, we find ourselves confronted with headlines about declining productivity\, increased rates of depression\, AI plagiarism\, and the cost of eggs. We debate about the meaning of international norms and rule of law while the settler empire is crumbling and fascism and white supremacy are growing in fertile ground. Universities are adjunctifying the professoriate\, union busting grad students and dining hall workers\, repressing student activism\, and refusing to address the near ubiquitous use of generative AI to write papers and solve equations. Meanwhile\, AI is driving innovation and acceleration of state violence from immigration enforcement to criminalization of protest to genocide. This talk will explore the promises and failures of regulating automation\, algorithmic assessment\, and generative AI through a framework of disability justice and crip feminist technoscience.

DESCRIPTION:The Pulitzer Prize-finalist and author of the breakout bestseller There There delivers a masterful follow-up to his already classic first novel in Wandering Stars. Extending his constellation of narratives into the past and future\, Tommy Orange traces the legacies of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and the Carlisle Indian Industrial School through three generations of a family in a story that is by turns shattering and wondrous. \nColorado\, 1864. Star\, a young survivor of the Sand Creek Massacre\, is brought to the Fort Marion prison castle\, where he is forced to learn English and practice Christianity by Richard Henry Pratt\, an evangelical prison guard who will go on to found the Carlisle Indian Industrial School\, an institution dedicated to the eradication of Native history\, culture\, and identity. A generation later\, Star’s son\, Charles\, is sent to the school\, where he is brutalized by the man who was once his father’s jailer. Under Pratt’s harsh treatment\, Charles clings to moments he shares with a young fellow student\, Opal Viola\, as the two envision a future away from the institutional violence that follows their bloodlines. \nIn a novel that is by turns shattering and wondrous\, Tommy Orange has conjured the ancestors of the family readers first fell in love with in There There—warriors\, drunks\, outlaws\, addicts—asking what it means to be the children and grandchildren of massacre. Wandering Stars is a novel about epigenetic and generational trauma that has the force and vision of a modern epic\, an exceptionally powerful new book from one of the most exciting writers at work today and soaring confirmation of Tommy Orange’s monumental gifts.

SUMMARY:Derek Gripper and Alam Khan
DESCRIPTION:In a rare and remarkable collaboration\, Alam Khan—son of the legendary Ali Akbar Khan—joins forces with one of South Africa’s most innovative guitarists\, Derek Gripper. The two first met in 2025 over a cup of tea in Alam’s teaching room\, a meeting that it led to a spontaneous trio recording with South African guitarist Guy Buttery. Alam went on to join Derek in concerts with his long-time collaborator\, the great Malian kora virtuoso Ballaké Sissoko\, and then in an intimate duo recording session in the hills of Berkeley. \nAlam and Derek focus on their respective immersions in deep classical traditions: Alam Khan brings a long apprenticeship under his father\, mastering the infinite art of raga improvisation within the Indian classical tradition. Derek Gripper\, originally trained in European classical and early string music\, has spent years translating the complex language of the West African kora to the guitar. Through this long study of the 21-string harp\, he developed a unique language of cyclical improvisation\, breaking out of the bounds of composed music and using the polyrhythmic possibilities of classical guitar technique to re-imagine the beginnings of sound in string music\, from harps and bows of the African continent. \nTogether\, Alam and Derek explore the heights of spontaneous creation\, re-imagining great African songs and Indian melodies through the art of spontaneous improvisation. \n\nEvents are offered for informational\, entertainment\, and educational purposes only. SUMMARY:Robert Macfarlane
DESCRIPTION:Across the globe\, rivers are dying—choked by pollution\, parched by drought\, and shackled by dams. The prevailing narrative treats freshwater as a mere resource\, water as a liquid asset\, existing solely for human use. This lecture offers a different current: an ancient and urgent story in which rivers live\, die\, and even possess rights. It reimagines rivers as vital\, sentient life-forces\, intertwined with our own survival. \nSpanning Ecuador\, India\, Aotearoa New Zealand\, northeastern Canada\, and the speaker’s native southern England\, the talk weaves together the voices of activists\, artists\, and lawmakers. Passionate and immersive\, it promises to spark debate\, shift perspectives\, and invite listeners to recognize a profound truth: our fate has always flowed with the rivers.

SUMMARY:Isaac Fitzgerald
DESCRIPTION:“It’s a difficult thing\, to separate legend from story from memory from fact.” \nFolklore and legend are critical components to any culture\, passing tidbits of local history and lessons learned through generations. The idea of the folk hero in particular plays an important role in creating this legacy\, rooted in the idea of benevolence and a direct connection to the people themselves. As a child\, author Isaac Fitzgerald was always captivated by the tales of Johnny Appleseed\, drawn in by family ties to the legend. Spurred on by his father’s larger-than-life stories and a shared restlessness to leave home and discover what lies beyond\, Fitzgerald found himself compelled to go on a new adventure. \nIn American Rambler: Walking the Trail of Johnny Appleseed\, Fitzgerald sets out on a particularly ambitious hike: walk from Massachusetts to Indiana\, following Appleseed’s path and turning a childhood fascination into a year-long personal journey. American Rambler recounts both the tangible and emotional trails Fitzgerald uncovered along the way\, littered with explorations of loss and grief\, ritual and faith. Fitzgerald invites readers to meander beside him–  stopping everywhere from grimy gas-station bathrooms to scenic apple picking destinations– with reflection\, humor\, and humility. Blending memoir\, history\, and travelogue through the American heartland\, American Rambler presents a welcome step away from the breakneck pace of modern life and a return to the roots of connection.

SUMMARY:Cole LeFavour
DESCRIPTION:Finding and forging one’s identity and purpose can be challenging enough. Doing that while also being a member of a marginalized identity living in a conservative milieu can add more complexity to this experience. For former state Senator Cole LeFavour\, that was very much a reality. \nLeFavour chronicles their life in a new book\, In the Arms of Mountains: A Memoir of Land\, Love\, and Queer Resistance in Red America. As Idaho’s first out LGBTQ+ lawmaker\, LeFavour explores a journey through gender\, power\, and rebellion against a reactionary system. When LeFavour was 11 years old\, their parents uprooted the family and purchased a ranch in the rugged landscape of Idaho. Cole and their sister came of age in the remote backcountry\, learning about themselves and the world in the wilds of a rural environment situated within a larger system of inequality. \nBy the time they left for college\, Cole was starting to grapple with their queer and nonbinary identity and was concerned about what lay ahead in their red home state. In the Arms of Mountains traces the contours of Cole’s life—from formative years connected to the land to working as a fire lookout and lone ranger\, to joining anti-apartheid protests\, and later becoming Idaho’s first openly queer legislator. \nLeFavour’s memoir aims to be a cautionary yet inspiring story of the power of political resistance in places you least expect it.

They go to art school and then navigate the art world for the next fifty years\, together and apart. \nTheir love changes over the decades\, but their commitment to each other and their search for meaning in the making of art never wanes. Contrapposto is not only about a relationship but about art and what it means to be an artist. The novel spans the globe\, from New York to Thailand\, Indiana to Paris\, and follows Cricket and Olympia through sickness and health\, war and death. \nContrapposto examines the rules and market of the art world\, but it is mainly a story of two friends who believe they can change that world and bring new meaning to it. \nJoining Eggers this evening is his friend\, fellow novelist Andrew Sean Greer\, whose latest work Villa Coco follows a nameless narrator\, an assistant to a wealthy widow. He is charged with the task of archiving art\, but is pulled into far more complicated schemes as he tries to reunite his employer with the love of her life before it is too late. \nBe sure to visit Town Hall Seattle for a conversation that explores the power of art and of human connection.
