In her newest book\, The Carbon Wave\, Leah Stokes chronicles the turbulent path of their climate bill as it veered between breakthrough and collapse — from the hopeful beginnings of the Green New Deal in 2018\, to the bill’s near-certain defeat by Senator Joe Manchin in the winter of 2021\, to the surprise passage of the landmark legislation in August 2022. During this critical time\, the author was pregnant\, or in the NICU with her premature twins\, and Aggarwal and Deveny were new parents too. \nInterlacing personal narratives with stories from Congress\, the White House\, and outside activists\, Stokes shows how dogged perseverance and collective action can still bend the course of history. The book concludes with an update from the second Trump administration\, explaining the parts of the bill that were — and were not — rolled back\, and why we should remain hopeful that progress is still being made. \nEveryone has been told to shrink their carbon footprint and lighten their load on our planet by changing their behavior. That pressure is felt across the city\, from neighborhoods like West Seattle to the streets and sidewalks downtown\, where visible poverty and homelessness continue to shape daily life. At the same time\, a large public and nonprofit infrastructure has emerged to respond to the crisis. Money is being spent. Policy is being made. Systems are expanding. But how does our city experience its own decisions? Are they meaningfully felt in the communities most affected? \nThis conversation is designed to bring together viewpoints that do not often share the same stage. Erik Bell represents neighborhood-level stewardship and volunteer cleanup through A Cleaner Alki. Anitra Freeman brings the perspective of longtime advocacy and direct engagement with the realities of homelessness through her work with Real Change. Simon Foster offers systems-level insight from regional homelessness leadership. \nModerated by Brandon Bye\, author of MORE PAINT\, the discussion will connect the visual and narrative world of the book to the harder civic questions underneath it. \nConsensus is not the goal of the event. She currently oversees investments and partnerships that expand access to community-informed services for older adults\, people with disabilities\, and caregivers. \nDr. Someireh Amirfaiz has been a leader in the nonprofit sector for over 25 years. She comes to her work at NAAPR as both an advocate and a mental health professional who has trained clinicians on the provision of culturally responsive mental health services to refugees. She is also a published researcher with a special focus on refugees. \nHazel G. Boado is a nonprofit executive with more than a decade leading equity-centered healthcare and care quality advancement. \nIn her current role at ACRS\, she advances culturally and linguistically responsive care for Asian and NH/PI older adults – integrating strategic planning\, operational excellence\, and cultural competency. \nSusan Schoeld began working for the King County Behavioral Health and Recovery Division 15 years ago\, where the goal is to reduce the use of criminal and crisis services.
