Join us to welcome the musical strains of Western Africa in Western Washington.
Trio Da Kali (meaning ‘to swear an oath’) unites three musicians from the Mande culture of southern Mali. With a history that goes back over a millennium, and maintained by four hereditary families, the Mande griots of West Africa tell the history of the Mande people. Hawa Kasse Mady Diabate (of Mali) is a new generation griot. Her vocals are backed by the balafon (wooden xylophone) and bass n’goni (lute) played by Lassana Diabate and Mamadou Kouyate, respectively, creating a contemporary sound unlike any previous griot ensemble.
The group is celebrating their newly released collaboration with the Grammy Award-winning Kronos Quartet. The album, Ladilikan, is produced by World Circuit Records.
