Off the coast of the African continent, due west of Senegal, is an island country in the Atlantic Ocean. This is Cape Verde. The island people are well known for their musicality and their distinctive sound that blends African, Portuguese, and Brazilian influences.
Inspired by Cape Verdean musicians before him, Tcheka takes the form and turns it on its head, creating a sound that is never just Cape Verdean. While referencing multiple genres from Cape Verde (batuku, funaná, finason, tabanka, morna and coladera), Tcheka’s music is also a busy intersection of Brazilian and African pop, traditional forms, folk, jazz, blues, rock, literature, anthropology, and film. He has created a unique and exquisite style that is a testament to the global influences he has embraced—and not to be missed. Find out more about Tcheka at his website or his Facebook.
This program will be available to purchase and watch/rewatch until 5/12.
