Not your run-of-the-mill book club, Bushwick shows offer a special interaction between audience and performer surrounding a common source. Each musician reads the show’s featured book and writes an original song inspired by it, unveiling the new work at the event. KEXP’s DJ Riz (Riz Rollins) helps curate the lineup this round, which includes Stasia Irons, Tiffany Wilson, Coreena Brown, Reggie Garrett, JR Rhodes, and others across multiple genres.
The first science fiction author to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, Seattle’s Octavia Butler brought African-American themes and characters into diverse future worlds. Parable of the Sower follows the journeys of a young, “hyper-empathic” woman in the 2020s, for which it earned a New York Times Notable Book of the Year nod when first published in 1994. Expect a wide-reaching musical conversation from this evocative book and bill.
