Leymah Gbowee
Using Women’s Power for Peace
Tuesday, October 4, 2011, 7:30PM
The Forum

Growing up in Africa, Leymah Gbowee was broken by a savage civil war—until her bitterness turned to action, with the realization that women are all too often the silent sufferers in prolonged conflicts. Gbowee was instrumental in galvanizing women across Liberia in 2003 to force a peace in the region; she organized Christian and Muslim women to demonstrate together, founding the Liberian Mass Action for Peace, launching protests—and even a sex strike. Her memoir Mighty Be Their Powers chronicles the violence she’s faced, the peace she has helped broker, and her continuing journey to harness the power of women. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life with University Book Store. Series media sponsorship provided by PubliCola. Series supported by The Boeing Company Charitable Trust and the RealNetworks Foundation.
