Leslie Helm’s decision to adopt Japanese children launched him on a personal journey back into his family’s 140-year relationship to Japan, beginning with his great-grandfather, who worked as a military advisor in 1870 and defied custom to marry his Japanese mistress. In conversation with Tom Ikeda, executive director of Densho: The Japanese American Legacy Project, Helm, editor of Seattle Business magazine and author of Yokohama Yankee, looks at Japan across five generations, with perspective from the inside and through foreign eyes. Drawing on his great-grandfather’s unpublished memoir to bring his history to life, Helm uses his family’s poignant experiences of love and war to embrace his Japanese and American heritage. Presented by Town Hall as part of the Global Voices thread of its Arts & Culture series, with University Book Store.
