Internationally known Tlingit artist Preston Singletary leads Khu.éex’ (prounced koo-eex), a self-described “Native American funk” band. Khu.éex’ features a unique mix of spoken word, Native storytelling, and singing, performed with an experimental approach with rock/funk aspects. The band also performs in traditional regalia and Northwest coast masks. The group’s just-released album “The Wilderness Within” was anchored by the late-great synth colossus Bernie Worrell (1944–2016) with drums by Stanton Moore, a founding member of Galactic. Performing band members will include Singletary on bass, avant-garde sax player Skerik (Critters Buggin, Garage a Trois, and Mad Season) and local musicians, Captain Raab on guitar, Davee C. on drums, Tim Kennedy on keyboards, and Denny Stern on percussion. They will be joined by several indigenous vocalists including Gene Tagaban, Nahaan, and Indrayani. The show will open with a set by Roger Fernandes, a local Native storyteller and culture bearer.
