Our community is in the midst of a mental health crisis, with deaths of despair on the rise and a tattered mental health system that is unable to keep up with demand. Mental health stigma and shame continue to permeate our communities and families, often to tragic endings. Psychotherapists, clinical social workers, and friends Josh Cutler and Ellen Slater will share their insights into how we can address these problems in our homes and communities, starting with the power of vulnerability as a tool for building resilience.
Josh Cutler is a social worker, mental health professional, and author based in the Seattle area. His recently published memoir, The Day Hospital, is a candid look at the author’s own experience with mental illness. As a mental health professional, his writing cuts to the core of the human struggle and reminds us all that mental health does not discriminate.
Ellen Slater is the founder of Head & Heart, an online and physical space based in Winthrop, WA, that offers yoga, mindfulness, sound healing, breath work, mental health, and wellness workshops. Ellen’s studies focus on the intersection of yoga and psychology, and she is a skilled facilitator and mindfulness teacher who is passionate about dismantling the stigma of mental health.
