Jonathan Safran Foer—the acclaimed author of Everything Is Illuminated; Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close; and a new work of nonfiction, Eating Animals—spent his youth oscillating between omnivore and vegetarian. But on the brink of fatherhood, and facing the prospect of making dietary choices on a child’s behalf, his casual questioning became more urgent; Foer ended up visiting factory farms in the middle of the night, dissecting the emotional ingredients of meals from his childhood, and probing some of his most primal instincts about right and wrong.
