For Valentine’s Day this year, consider one of life’s perennial questions: What is love? In her new book, philosopher Carrie Jenkins breaks down the nature of romantic love. Is love a social construct (the idea of a perfect fairy tale romance)? Or is it biological (those anxiety-inducing heart palpitations)? Jenkins says we must recognize love in all of its complexity in order to decide for ourselves how to love. Drawing from her own polyamorous lifestyle, she examines the ways in which our parameters of love have changed in recent years to be more accepting of homosexual, interracial, and non-monogamous relationships. She also imagines how they will continue to evolve in the future. Weaving together anecdotal, cultural, and scientific views, Jenkins seeks to understand what it means to say “I love you.”
