Social justice advocate (and former University of Washington student) Gordon Hirabayashi challenged the U.S. government’s WWII orders incarcerating persons of Japanese ancestry, including citizens, on the West Coast This panel of members of the Gordon Hirabayashi and Fred Korematsu coram nobis legal teams and playwright of “Hold These Truths,” will give a first-hand account of his struggles to fight back against the country who betrayed him. They’ll discuss his motivations, firm belief in the US Constitution, and tireless activism. They’ll also give examples of how we can all be courageous citizens and, using Hirabayashi’s example, work to advance equality and social justice in Seattle and beyond. Featured panelists include moderator Frank Abe, Rod Kawakami, Lorraine Bannai, Daniel J. Ichinaga, and Jeanne Sakata, creator of the Hirabayashi-based, one-man show “Hold These Truths” (currently at ACT Theatre).
