Canceled CANCELED – We Call it Flamenco
A Sensational Spanish Dance Show
A conversation with Peter Harnik, Lid I-5, and Cascade Bicycle Club
Note: Town Hall events are approximately 75 minutes long.
Come to learn how Seattle — and the nation — can repurpose old transportation corridors to improve the environment, reduce energy use, and help curtail climate change. Author and film producer Peter Harnik will tell the history of the rails-to-trails movement and the critical role played by the state of Washington and Seattle’s Burke-Gilman Trail. Afterward, there will be a description of the exciting campaign to construct a park lid over Interstate 5 and complete rail trails on the east side of Lake Washington.
Peter Harnik, a life-long conservationist, is co-founder of the national Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, where he served for 10 years as vice president. Following his retirement, he spent four years researching and writing From Rails to Trails, a history of the movement that shines a particular spotlight on the role of Seattle and Washington State. The book is now being made into a documentary to be aired on PBS in 2025. Harnik, who lives with his wife in Arlington, Va., claims to have bicycled or walked on 207 rail-trails so far.

Her dedication extends to the U District, where she leads innovative advocacy efforts for Lid I-5 North. This initiative aims to reconnect communities spanning from the U District to Wallingford, Ravenna, and Roosevelt by constructing a highway lid over Interstate 5 between NE 45th and NE 50th Streets.
