Drawing on lessons from The Nature Record\, the first independent national assessment of nature in the United States\, Levin reflects on what four years of scientific synthesis revealed about stewardship\, resilience and responsibility. Blending personal stories\, ecological science and reflections from ancient wisdom and contemporary literature\, this talk explores why nature matters not only for biodiversity but also for our shared future. At a moment of rapid environmental and social change\, Levin considers what the evidence tells us about our relationship with nature and the choices before us. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\nPhil Levin is a conservation scientist whose work bridges the gap between science and practice\, bringing together the natural and social sciences to advance the conservation of marine\, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. DESCRIPTION:Climate change is placing unprecedented pressure on the crops that feed the world\, altering patterns of disease\, flooding\, and drought in ways that threaten global food security. Professor Pamela Ronald\, a leader in plant genetics research at UC Davis\, will describe her research identifying the genes that allow crops to withstand disease and environmental stress\, including her discovery of the flood-tolerant Sub1 rice variety now grown by millions of smallholder farmers across Asia. Her talk will explore the science behind climate-resilient agriculture\, efforts to reduce agriculture’s environmental footprint\, the path from laboratory discovery to impact in farmers’ fields\, and her perspective on genetics\, sustainability\, and the future of food. \nPamela Ronald is a Professor at UC Davis\, an Investigator at the Innovative Genomics Institute at UC Berkeley\, and Director of Grass Genetics at the Joint Bioenergy Institute. She earned her B.A. from Reed College\, M.S. degrees from Stanford University and Uppsala University\, and her Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. \nDr. Ronald’s research focuses on plant genes that confer resistance to disease and tolerance to environmental stress. With Chris’ leadership and advocacy\, Washington has made significant investments in services for students with disabilities\, added more career and technical education opportunities\, increased student access to school meals\, boosted the number of dual language programs beginning in elementary school\, and much more during Chris’ tenure. In his free time\, you can find Chris hiking\, cheering on Washington’s sports teams\, or seeing a movie with his wife\, Kim\, and young adult children\, Carter and Kennedy. \nDahlia Bazzaz is an education reporter at The Seattle Times\, where for the past 10 years she’s reported on everything from Seattle Public Schools to Supreme Court decisions. To meet the need\, the county will need roughly 172\,000 more affordable homes over the next 20 years\, and more than 120\,000 of those for people with the very lowest incomes. At the same time\, funding for the supportive housing that helps people move out of homelessness is under major strain. Making real progress will take a steady\, shared commitment to housing as a regional priority. \nJoin the Housing Development Consortium for an evening on what it will take to make the progress we need. Christine Caldwell\, founder of the nonprofit End of Life Psychedelic Care\, works at the frontier of ketamine-assisted care for existential distress and anticipatory grief.
