The new series Science Now, co-produced with the UW, kicks off with “Should I Stay or Should I Go?”, a look at coho migration patterns. It’s also a companion piece to the talk by Charles Moore on Plastics (immediately following) Most Pacific salmon travel thousands of miles from their natal river to the Pacific Ocean, then return to nearly the exact location of their birth. However, some fish remain in the semi-enclosed, urbanized waters of Puget Sound—risky “resident” behavior. Jessica Rohde, an M.S. student at UW’s School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, shares her research on the diversity of coho movement patterns, which uses acoustic telemetry and data from commercial fisheries to determine whether hatchery production is related to this resident behavior.
