Peggy Orenstein: A New Generation of Girlie-Girls

Wednesday, February 15, 2012, 7:30 – 9:00pm

Great Hall; enter on 8th Avenue. $5.

Peggy Orenstein’s 2006 essay What’s Wrong with Cinderella? sparked a firestorm; now she digs more deeply into our growing girlie-girl culture. Facing down her own confusion as a mother raising a girl, journalist Orenstein, author of the bestseller Schoolgirls and Cinderella Ate My Daughter, examines the seemingly-retro trend toward the ultra-feminine, from Disney princesses to the color pink; the role the ubiquitous marketing machine plays in packaging and promoting it; and what it could mean for our daughters’ identities and futures. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with University Book Store. Series media sponsorship provided by PubliCola. Series supported by The Boeing Company Charitable Trust and the RealNetworks Foundation.

Tickets are $5 at Brown Paper Tickets or 800/838-3006 and at the door beginning at 6:30 pm.
