Is it time to elect a new school board? Four of the board’s seven sitting members are up for reelection this year. All of them face serious challenges from candidates who criticize the board’s handling of several controversial issues–from the school district losing $1.8 million to shuttering schools. Here’s your chance to see both candidates in those four races go head-to-head before you vote. Sponsored by The Stranger.
Admission is FREE, but print-at-home tickets from Stranger Tickets are required.

Questions for school board incumbents/challengers:
1. What action did/would you take to hold the district staff accountable for failing to keep their commitments to students and families following the latest school closures (APP, Cooper, NOVA)?
2. What action did/would you take to hold the district staff accountable for failing to fulfill their commitment to community engagement such as the commitment written into the Strategic Plan and the adopted Community Engagement Protocols for Strategic Plan initiatives?
3. How do/would you enforce Board policies?
4. What is the current status of the Strategic Plan? What projects are part of it? How many projects have been added or removed since the Plan was written? Are they on pace? Are they on budget? Are they delivering results?
5. Given the fact that closed schools need to be re-opened (Viewlands, Rainier View, Fairmount Park) and the District now needs school capacity in areas where buildings were sold or leased (Allen, University Heights, Fauntleroy, TT Minor, Mann), were the school closures and sales a mistake?
6. How did/would you fulfill the Board’s duty to review the performance of district programs?
7. Other than with lip service, how have/would you support advanced learning, alternative programs, special education, and bilingual education?
8. It’s an indisputable fact that we need another middle school in the north, so why delay the process to re-open Wilson-Pacific as a middle school? Where will north-end elementary APP land? Where will the World School land? Where will NOVA land?
9. If we have long waiting lists for alternative programs, doesn’t that mean that we should add to the alternative education capacity? If we have waiting lists for Spectrum, doesn’t that mean that we should add to the Spectrum capacity? Shouldn’t capacity be responsive to demand?
10. Was the Southeast Education Initiative a success? How did/would you hold the staff accountable for the results?
